Hanbury and Draycott Women's Institute

This was formed in December 1924 and met in the kitchen of Hanbury Hall at a time when there was no electricity or running water in the village. The 'WI' was instrumental in bringing local people together by having classes in the crafts like rug making, embriodery, basket work, leather work glove-making dressmaking and cookery.

Nowadays, Hanbury and Draycott WI usually meets in Hanbury Memorial Hall, Anslow Road on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. We do not meet there in August and often have 'off site' meetings in the summer months, enjoying such things as canal trips and visits to local attractions - such as the nearby National Memorial Arboretum or the Ghost Walk in Burton upon Trent.

We are a relatively small group, numbers-wise, at around 25. Our age range is from 40s to 80s and we would love to have more ladies of any age- group join us. It is not all about "Jam and Jerusalem' in the slightest, although, having said that, we do have expert jam and cake bakers and cooks amongst our membership. New blood is ALWAYS welcome, especially when we are involved with fund-raising events such as the Hanbury Church Plant and Cake Sale or the Draycott Show. If you're not an expert in anything, never fear, as we have friendship and comraderie in abundance. If you've recently moved to the Hanbury area, there's no better way of getting to know some of your new neighbours.

We held our own Olympics in 2012 with hula hoop, tiddleywinks, skipping and skittles amongst the disciplines contested. A local Olympic Torchbearer presented the medals!

Our monthly meetings start at 7.30pm. After the general WI business has been covered, we have a speaker on wide-ranging topics, from Royal Yacht crew to happy hens, or a demonstration of a craft technique (sugarcraft, crochet and beadwork in recent months). There will always be refreshments and sometimes nibbles after the meeting.

If you would like to join in on one of our meetings, do feel free to call Jackie on 01283 820514, Judy on 01283 813932, Chris on 01283 815736 or Jeanine on 01283 813662.
